Special Forces Week #4 Gallup, NM

Jim Van GelderenSpecial Forces Updates

Gallup, NM is just south of the Navajo Nation and just north of the Zuni Indian reservation. As a result there were many Navajo teens as well as teens from other backgrounds that came to the outreach.  I think we had almost 60 different teens come with about 30 who made salvation decisions.

Also, several parents came to the evening rallies and heard the Gospel as well as the teens. I asked one set of parents, “If you died would you go to heaven?”  “Probably,” was the dad’s quick answer.  I had the opportunity to tell them that since salvation was entirely dependent on what Jesus did on the cross we could know for sure we were going to heaven if we were trusting Him.  After spending a few minutes on this theme, the dad responded, “That makes sense.”  There were many opportunities like this after the message to talk with adults and teens about the Gospel.  It was a blessing!

On Wednesday a young lady raised her hand, but she did not respond to the invitation. When one of our team members approached her about her need, she laughed at team co-captain.  The team member gave her the Gospel, but did not think she was serious.  She told this young lady, “You think about this, and come back tomorrow.”  A few minutes later she approached the co-captain and said, “I need to talk to you.”  The co-captain, led her to Lord in the auditorium.  She texted the team co-captain later and this interchange occurred.

Young Lady: I am going to read my verses

Co-captain: I am so glad…let me know what God tells you. 🙂

Young Lady: He told me that he forgave me and washed my sins away.

Co-captain: That’s great!

Young Lady: I know! Now I am happy. Im srry that I laughed at you when you were talking to me earlier

Another young man came the first night and after the Gospel message raised his hand that he was concerned about where he would spend eternity, but he didn’t respond that night. Although he came all three nights, he did not raise his hand or respond to any of the invitations.  His team captain came up to him after the final night and asked him, “Where are you going to spend eternity?” The young man responded that he was unsure.  “Do you mind me sharing with you how you can know where you are going to spend eternity?”  The young man paused, but then responded, “Sure.”  The team captain went through Gospel and saw this young man bow his head and, we trust, put his faith in Jesus Christ alone for salvation.

Another young man came all three nights. His team captain became burdened for him and came to him on final night.  The team captain asked him where he would go when he died.  “I’d go to hell,” he answered.  “Why?”  asked the team captain.  “Because I smoke, I drink,” and then he mentioned a bunch of sins.  The captain presented the Gospel and watched as this young man realized Jesus could save him.  He too bowed his head and, we trust, put his faith in Jesus Christ.

It was a week of planting, watering and harvesting the Gospel seed. It truly was a joy for all involved.
