Special Forces Week #5 Lemon Grove, CA

Jim Van GelderenSpecial Forces Updates

I do not think there are many lemons left in Lemon Grove, CA, but there sure are a lot of people.  This suburb outside of San Diego manifests need as so many of our metropolitian areas do.

The last time we were with Pastor Phil Sherwood was three years ago.  At that time the ministry was in La Mesa, CA.  Since then it has moved to Lemon Grove.  There is also a Spanish church, Open Door Baptist Church, that was involved in the week of ministry.

The first night a young man showed up early.  He played the games and heard the message.  When the invitation was given, he responded.  The youth pastor took him to a table outside and began to open God’s Word and review the Gospel.  In spite of being in full view of other teens, this young man wept over his sin as he came to Jesus!

One of our female team members saw a young man in a garage while she was out recruiting.  She took one of the teens from the church with her and they went and invited the young man out to the rally nights.  The boy’s father was there so they were able to engage him in the situation.  On the final night this young man came out and was saved!  When I asked him, “Where would you go if you died right now?”, he responded, “Heaven!”  When I asked him where he would have gone if he had died before he came to the War?”, he said, “I’m not allowed to say that word.”  Well, at least, he knew what he was saved from!

On Friday there were several good testimonies.  One young gave the following testimony.  I have written as exactly like he said it.  “For, like, one to two years God has been trying to talk to me to leave some sin behind me – some stuff that is not correct. And I have been resisting a lot. I was going to resist this week too. And then my team captain, he, came and talked to me. Everything that was sin in my life, I talked to my dad and everything got taken care of. God is really merciful. He gives you a lot of opportunities. I just want to encourage you guys to not waste them and if you have anything that is in your heart that’s hidden to take care of it with your authorities.”
