Special Forces Week #5 – Woodbridge, VA

Jim Van GelderenSpecial Forces Updates

In 1997, the War of Special Forces came for the very first time to Heritage Baptist Church in Woodbridge, VA.  Since that time we have had the privilege to return periodically.  Over these years, we have watched the church build some beautiful buildings, but more than that, we have seen the church and school grow.  The staff there is always a blessing and we appreciate their heart for ministry.  It has always been a privilege to serve the Lord at Heritage.

That first year we had a high night of 216.  This year we came the closest to setting a new record.  On Friday night we recorded an attendance of 209.  The Seals and Recon fought to the end, but the Recon ended up with the win this time.  The Rangers fell on hard times at the end of the week and fell out of the running.  At least they didn’t give up!

One interesting fact about this week was the weather.  Each War night it rained.  The first two nights we played outside and the field got muddier and muddier.  The last night we went in the gym for the competitions, but we went outside under the pavilion for the campfire service.  Yes, they did have a campfire in spite of the rain!

Most importantly during the evening rallies, we had several community teens come and get saved.   One teen girl and her mother came the next Sunday.  The mother asked one of the ladies for some counsel.  During that counsel, the Gospel was clearly given.  Although the mother did not get saved, she went home and told her husband what she had been told.  He replied, “I need help, but I think I need to be saved.”  He called Pastor Edwards and set up an appointment.  At that appointment, he was saved.  The daughter had been witnessing to her parents!

Several students gave testimonies on Friday night.  One girl threw some CDs into the fire the Lord had convicted her that should not be in your life.  We thank the Lord for all He did during this week!
