Special Forces Week #9 – Mt. Pleasant, PA

Jim Van GelderenSpecial Forces Updates

In the fall of 1978 I arrived at the Christian college to which the Lord had led me. In the room next to me was Rick Fox. Rick has faithfully served the Lord as a pastor for most of the years since college. It was good once again to minister with him and his wife. They have served the Lord out in western PA for over a decade.

The Lord led the team captains in a marvelous way in the recruiting effort. Many teens were invited. When Wednesday came, we had well over 70 teens. The next night we hit 100! It was thrilling to have a room full of many young people. We ended on Friday with over 80 teens.

In the Christian school, the students began to get involved in the War of Special Forces, but I began to sense and notice a resistance to responding to the Lord’s working in their hearts. On Friday, God burdened me to deal with the “fear of man” (Proverbs 29:25). Although this is a problem in any school, I sensed it might be one of the major obstacles here. The Lord worked and we had well over 50 percent of the students respond. We had a wonderful prayer meeting and many teens with tears asked the Lord to forgive them for their failure as a result of the fear of man. Many of them gave testimony that night. Perhaps the most thrilling thing was that two students that morning got saved. I asked to speak with one of them and asked him what the Lord was doing in his heart. His eyes filled with tears and he pointed at the word, “salvation” on a verses sheet in his hand. A little while later he settled it!

About nine months ago, I had the privilege of being at this same church for a short time. I preached an evangelistic activity and several were saved. It was great to talk with some of them at this event. Many of them brought friends out to the War of Special Forces. On Wednesday, one of those friends heard the Gospel. God particularly dealt with him about his taking God’s name in vain. He responded to the invitation and one of our team members dealt with him. He wept his way to salvation. Afterwards, he still could not talk. He was overwhelmed with what God did. On Friday he gave a testimony and again broke into tears as he testified of his salvation. On Friday evening another friend of this group was brought. He also wept his way to Jesus. That will keep you going!
