Jim Van GelderenSpecial Forces Updates

Crescencio Diaz is the pastor of the Spanish church, Open Door Baptist Church, in Lemon Grove, CA. I was touched with the burden of him and his people. They have a prayer meeting early each morning at the church. The folks were so supportive of the week. Although they do not have a Christian school, we did have some rally nights for just their teens, and then three rally nights that were evangelistic in nature. We are thankful for the Lord’s working in hearts.

On Monday night, several young people from the church went with the team out recruiting. Josiah, the Marine team captain, had a guy with him when they went into California’s favorite fast food burger joint, In-N-Out Burger. They invited a teen and his dad to come to the War nights. The dad brought his son the first night, and they both seemed to enjoy it. When time for the invitation, the son indicated that he was not saved. Judson, the Seal team captain, counseled the young man, and he was gloriously saved that night. The next night, they both came back. There was a difference on the young man’s face. He knew he was saved, and his countenance showed it. He could not thank the team enough for the event, nor could he express how thankful he was that he had gotten saved. It was encouraging to see the joy of his salvation.

Abi, the Marine co-captain, recruited a young man at the nearby high school on Tuesday. He seemed to be just a polite person, but come to find out he was genuinely interested in the event. He came very early the first night and was pumped about the competition. The young man was plugged in the entire night. He responded during the invitation, and Josiah was able to lead him to the Lord. He too, was so excited that he got his salvation settled.

Janna, the Seal co-captain, talked to a girl who came with her brother the second and final night. Her brother was getting counseled by one of the team captains, so Janna took the opportunity to find out where the girl was at spiritually. The girl said she was an atheist, but that she was searching. Janna was able to share truth with the girl, and get her number to stay in contact with her.

Annaleese, the Ranger co-captain, recruited a group of young people from Haiti. They knew very little English, but they were still very excited about the competitions. They came the first and the final night. The first night, they listened to the preaching, but could not understand much of it. On the final night, we contacted a friend of ours who lives in New York and speaks their language, Creole. My wife went through the Gospel, and our friend interpreted it for the young people to hear it in their language. They all either got saved that night or got assurance of their salvation.
